The Endless Summer Lie

Why Most Marriages Struggle (And How to Build One That Lasts)

We’ve all seen the movies.

A couple locks eyes across a crowded room.

They fall in love. They face one or two challenges.

Cue the dramatic music. Cue the wedding.

Cue the happily ever after.

This is the story we’ve been sold.

A myth that marriage, once sealed with love, will somehow coast on cruise control for the rest of your life.

Hollywood has called it romance. We call it the Endless Summer lie.

And the truth?

It’s wrecking marriages.

We Were That Couple

Emily and I came into marriage full of love, vision, and hope.

But we also brought in something far more dangerous: naivety.

We underestimated the hardship.

We overestimated our readiness.

And we paid the price.

Those first five years?

Brutal. Beautiful. Full of grace and grit—but mostly? Hard.

It wasn’t because we didn’t love each other.

It was because we weren’t prepared for the reality of marriage.

Mike Tyson Was Right

“Everyone’s a fighter until they get punched in the face.”

Marriage will punch you in the face.

Not always with betrayal or tragedy—sometimes with the slow erosion of disconnection, unspoken expectations, or simply the exhaustion of life.

The blow might come from outside—loss, stress, financial strain.

Or from within—wounds, pride, assumptions.

And when it comes, love alone isn’t enough.

The Problem Isn’t Pain. It’s Being Unprepared.

We’ve watched countless couples over the years fall not because they didn’t love each other…

…but because they didn’t plan for what was coming.

They believed in the fairy tale.

They trusted the myth.

But marriage is not a Disney montage or a rom-com resolution.

Marriage is a daily practice.

A muscle you must train.

A garden you must tend.

A blueprint you must follow.

Introducing: The Blueprint for a Thriving Marriage™

At Project Roots & Wings, we’ve developed a proven framework that gives couples more than just hope.

It gives them tools.

We call it the Blueprint for a Thriving Marriage™, and it’s built on six essential pillars:

•Vision: Where are we going together?

•Mission: How do we get there?

•Values: What guides our decisions and behavior?

•Virtues: Who are we becoming individually and together?

•Principles: What non-negotiables anchor us?

•Community: Who surrounds, supports, and sharpens us?

This isn’t theory.

It’s what helped save our marriage.

And it’s what we now share with couples who are engaged, struggling, or simply wanting more than survival.

Stop Chasing the Fairytale. Start Building the Foundation.

If you’ve been punched in the face by marriage—

If the “endless summer” turned to winter and you weren’t ready—

You’re not alone. And you’re not beyond restoration.

But you need more than good intentions.

You need a plan.

Let’s build one—together.
